To awake from our extended summer break, we're starting off by featuring a selection of portfolios made by the nine fototazo microgrant recipients during their 10-day workshop at the University of Iowa in late June and early July.

Their portfolios will be featured over the next several days with a short text on the work in the original Spanish with an English translation presented after the images. Today we feature the work of Aura Lambertinez and Natalia Lopera.

Yesterday we featured the work of Margarita Valdivieso and Juliana Henao Alcaraz.

This project speaks of consumer culture in Iowa City, a look at buying, selling, spending and throwing away.

The need to stand out, of comfort and of immediacy are portrayed by brightness, color, sequences and repetitions representing an illusory, striking, magical and worn-out world.

Foreign
Natalia Lopera

"Foreign" is an exercise that allowed me to experiment with ways of linking images and ideas and the new dynamics that are generated with the use of other formats. I thought about marrying two somewhat contrary elements, exploring ways to make known an unknown place and to make intimate an external and foreign experience.
