The Image: Georges Salameh, "Sedimentations"


I have spent much of my life wandering between Mediterranean shores. In 2009, while on Salina, a volcanic island north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea, I traced a path to a "room" carved in the extensive mountain of lava. This was a small rectangular black space with almost no light...but it reflected an open air "rooftop" behind a dry bush and a small hill. This was a kind of revelation, almost an epiphany, tender, sacred, silent, otherworldly. Or perhaps it was just a sedimentation, grey dust waiting for a gust of wind, or a shower to mark a moment of longing …
