International Site Profiles: Invisible Photographer Asia

In an opinion piece on the limitations of access to crowdfunding projects, we made an argument for taking the initiative to explore sites that promote photographers from countries and cultures less frequently seen.

We're following that post with a series of short profiles that will collectively provide a starting point for an exploration of international blogs, online magazines, and pages. We began by looking at KileleWe Take Pictures TooArab Image FoundationGreater Middle East PhotoSpace CadetStreet Level Japan, and Kantor Berita MES 56, and Japan Exposures. Today we follow with a snapshot of Invisible Photographer Asia.

In a sentence: A polished major online platform for street photography and visual journalism in Asia.

In two short years, Invisible Photographer Asia has become a leading - if not the leading - online force for pan-Asian street photography and visual journalism. In addition to their site, they curate exhibitions in a physical gallery space in Singapore where they also host events and workshops.

The IPA site includes interviews with photographers in Asia, photo essays and photo singles, transcripts from conferences held at their space in Singapore, short journalistic films and videos, with a handful of equipment reviews thrown in. It also hosts a community forum that's unfortunately not much used. They have an open submissions policy and also hold competitions.
