Q&A: Victoria Holguín of fotomeraki

Photographer and publisher Alec Soth and I have started a small project on our mutual sites that will take an extended look at contemporary photography in Colombia. Medellín-based photographer and educator Gabriel Mario Vélez will also be joining us on this project.

We're looking at trends and traditions; events, institutions and venues; as well as pursuing conversations with curators, academics, gallerists and photographers themselves. We plan to approach the project through a variety of types of posts including interviews, book reviews, published letters, portfolios of images and more.

Posts so far in the series include:
What is happening in contemporary Colombian photography?, LBM
Popsicle #40: Guadalupe Ruiz, LBM
Project Release: Juan Orrantia, "The afterlife of coca (and its) dreams" fototazo
Portfolio: Matt O'Brien, "No Dar Papaya" fototazo
Interview: Camilo Echavarría, fototazo
Jorge Panchoaga on Contemporary Photography in Colombia, fototazo
An Interview with Mateo Gómez Garcia, LBM
The Image: Carlos Villalon, Some frames I have made, fototazo

Today we continue with a short Q&A with Victoria Holguín, photographer and editor of fotomeraki, the new - and perhaps the only - site dedicated completely to contemporary photography in Colombia. The images that accompany this post have been featured on fotomeraki.

fotomeraki is on Twitter and Facebook.

Biography
I am a photographer from Cali, Colombia living in Bogotá, in love with my profession. I am always surprised by the details, light and magic of each situation, so that each image can be an excuse to surprise those who look at the photographs. Currently I am available during the week for various projects on commission, such as portraiture, fashion and photojournalism.

fototazo: Tell us a little about yourself and your background in photography.

Victoria Holguín: I got my first camera when I was a child and, thanks to my dad, I learned what it takes to fall in love with photography; I have been living in Bogotá for six years and when I arrived here was the moment when I decided I want to live only taking pictures.

People and their stories fill me with inspiration, hopefully always full of spontaneity and natural light; you can find a little bit of everything I love on my site here.

f: Why did you decide to start fotomeraki?

¿Por qué decidiste lanzar fotomeraki?

VH: This idea started when I began a series of portraits called Fotógrafas Colombianas. I needed to find female Colombian photographers pursuing their profession, but when I tried to look beyond those that I knew personally and those that other people were recommending to me living nearby, I couldn't find anyplace showing the excellent photographic work being done nationally.

So I decided to create fotomeraki, a place that - besides showing works by photographers currently working in different fields of photography - will have a discerning curation process that will invite each photographer to continue to refine their photographic language over time [by returning to feature their work over time] and also to keep creating original content. This will both inspire and keep the photographers, and others interested in the site's content, actively thinking about the subject.

f: What kind of posts do you plan to make on the site?

VH: Mainly photographic projects by Colombian photographers, showing a specific series of their work. This is so that in the future we can present new series that those photographers are working on in order to check the evolution of their different projects.

The site will also present works of photography students, a very important part of the site, because it is here that we can see how the eyes of the new, young talents are being educated and see what kind of projects are most inspiring to them when they are making their personal bodies of work which is also in a way defining the work that they will do in the future.

f: Are there any editorial elements that tie together the site in terms of the work you'll be showing? Or it more of a grab bag of different types of work?

VH:  I want to show every type of work we can imagine, because the interesting thing about this site is that people who visit will see that photographers in the country are working in different areas of photography and in all of them they are working in an extraordinary way.

f: How do you make decisions on what to publish from submissions? Do photographers have to be located in Colombia or do you also accept submissions from Colombian living abroad?

VH: The works that are eventually published are specific series from each photographer, leaving room for new projects by the same authors in the future; furthermore I look for a high level of quality in the work of each photographer chosen, so that new talents and everyone else interested in photography who are doing their own work will want to reach that level.

Submissions are open to all Colombian photographers living inside or outside the country.

f: Do you think that there are tendencies towards regional or national qualities in Colombian photography based on your submissions and your experience, or is photography in Colombia more part of an international dialogue in terms of working methods, forms and themes?

VH: I think the general trend in terms of the type of work being shown continues to be documentary photography. I think it makes it "easier" to photograph, because they usually start doing the work in the environment around them or where they have the most access.

But it should be noted that gradually there are new types of artistic proposals with projects that are really powerful and which are receiving an international audience, with different themes and theoretical developments proposed. That is precisely what I want to show on fotomeraki, to invite all photographers to continue to follow these new proposals and to continue to strengthen our profession.

f: What other sites from Colombia or featuring Colombian work would you recommend to readers?

¿Qué otras páginas de Colombia o mostrando fotografía colombiana recomendarías a nuestros lectores?

VH: Unfortunately I do not know another site that is dedicated exclusively to publishing works of Colombian photographers, but there is Fotografia Colombiana, a place where anyone interested in photography may find events and exhibitions being held in the country, as well as open calls for proposals and workshops.
