fototazo has asked a group of 50 curators, gallery owners, blog
writers, photographers, academics and others actively engaged with Latin
American photography to pick two early career photographers whose work
deserves recognition.
This project aims to highlight
great work being made in the region today and also to provide a starting
point in both English and Spanish for exploring contemporary Latin
American photography. LatAm f100 is a collaboration between fototazo and
the photographer and educator
Jaime Permuth.
Today we continue the series with selections by George Slade. His biography follows his selections.

fototazo
ha invitado a un grupo de 50 curadores, galeristas, escritores,
fotógrafos, y académicos - entre otros individuos seriamente
comprometidos con la fotografía latinoamericana - a escoger cada quién
dos fotógrafos emergentes cuya obra sea merecedora de mayor
reconocimiento.
Este proyecto es una manera de celebrar
el gran trabajo que se lleva a cabo en la región. Asimismo, busca
proporcionar un punto de partida bilingüe en inglés y en español a las
audiencias que deseen explorar la fotografía contemporánea en
latinoamérica. LatAm f100 es una colaboración entre fototazo y el
fotógrafo y educador Jaime Permuth.

When I received a copy of
Alejandro Chaskielberg's Otsuchi to
review for photo-eye, I admit feeling a bit confused. I couldn't wrap my visual cortex around these strange images. But the longer and closer I looked, the more they drew me into their discomfort. His photographs, after all, are about displacement, so why shouldn't they have a quality of alienation? I realized that earlier work of his I'd seen had a comparably unsettling effect on me; when this happens, you have to pay attention.
Cuando recibí una copia de Otsuchi de Alejandro Chaskielberg para revisar para Photo-Eye, admito sentirme un poco confundido. No podía hacer que mi corteza visual entendiera estas extrañas imágenes. Pero cuanto más miraba y más de cerca, más me atraían hacia su incomodidad. Sus fotografías, después de todo, son sobre el desplazamiento, así que ¿por qué no deberían tener una cualidad de alienación? I got hooked on
Alejandra Laviada's work a few years ago when I discovered her photographs of assembled artifacts in the "Juarez 56," "Photo Sculptures" and "Re-Constructions" series. I love her trash esthetic (she's a bricoleur, a latter day Rauschenberg), her subtle, gorgeous lighting and colors and the way her photographs come across like paintings, sculptures and documentation of performance art mixed with urban exploration - all at the same time.
Me enganché al trabajo de Alejandra Laviada hace unos años cuando descubrí sus fotografías de artefactos ensamblados en las series "Juárez 56", "Esculturas fotográficas" y "Re-Construcciones". Me encanta su estética de basura (ella es un bricoleur, una Rauschenberg tardía), Su iluminación y colores sutiles y magníficos, y la forma en que sus fotografías aparecen como pinturas, esculturas y documentación del arte de la performance mezclado con la exploración urbana, todo al mismo tiempo.
