LatAm f100: Roberto Fernández Ibáñez and Paz Errázuriz

fototazo has asked a group of 50 curators, gallery owners, blog writers, photographers, academics and others actively engaged with Latin American photography to pick two early career photographers whose work deserves recognition.

This project aims to highlight great work being made in the region today and also to provide a starting point in both English and Spanish for exploring contemporary Latin American photography. LatAm f100 is a collaboration between fototazo and the photographer and educator Jaime Permuth.

Today we continue the series with selections by Susana Raab. Her biography follows her selections.

The series also includes responses from Molly Roberts, Mariela Sancari, Alonso Castillo, Paccarik Orue, Katrin Eismann, Dina Mitrani, Don Gregorio Anton, Cristina De Middel, Arturo Soto, Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Guillermo Srodek-Hart, Yorgos Efthymiadis, Livia Animas and Juanita Bermúdez.

fototazo ha invitado a un grupo de 50 curadores, galeristas, escritores, fotógrafos, y académicos - entre otros individuos seriamente comprometidos con la fotografía latinoamericana - a escoger cada quién dos fotógrafos emergentes cuya obra sea merecedora de mayor reconocimiento.

Este proyecto es una manera de celebrar el gran trabajo que se lleva a cabo en la región. Asimismo, busca proporcionar un punto de partida bilingüe en inglés y en español a las audiencias que deseen explorar la fotografía contemporánea en Latinoamérica. LatAm f100 es una colaboración entre fototazo y el fotógrafo y educador Jaime Permuth.

I think that the work of Roberto Fernandez is pure concept and art. I love his clever visual metaphors and the tones on his monochrome copies.

Paz Errázuriz, Chile

I meet Paz Errazuriz at a photo festival in Brazil and found her to be one of those wonderful spirits, humble and conscious; whose intimacy with her subjects is strongly recognizable in her photographs. She is also very unknown in the northern hemisphere.

Paz Errazuriz me familiaricé en un fotofestival en Brasil y la encontré como una de esas de espíritus maravillosos, humildes y conscientes, cuya intimidad con sus súbditos es palpable en sus fotografías. Y muy desconocido ella es al norte.

Susana Raab was born in Lima, Peru and raised throughout the United States. She is a fine art and documentary photographer based out of Washington, DC, pursuing photographic projects in addition to working as the photographer of the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, documenting the East of the River communities in DC.

Susana’s work has been exhibited internationally and nationally, at venues including the Corcoran Museum of Art, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Madrid, the Pingyao Photo Festival, Noorderlicht Fotofestival in the Netherlands and the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, DC.

Susana has been the recipient of the White House News Photographers’ Project Grant,  DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Artist Fellowships, Honorable Mentions in Center’s Project Competition and Curator’s Choice Awards and a Puffin Grant, among others. Her work is held in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History; The Library of Congress, Division of Prints & Photographs; The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University; The Art Museum of the Americas; The EnFoco Collection; and the DC Public Art Bank.

She received her MA in Visual Communications at Ohio University and holds a BA in English Literature from James Madison University.

Susana Raab nació en Lima, Perú y criado en los Estados Unidos. Ella es un fotógrafo-arte y documentales trabajando en Washington, DC, la creación de trabajo personal, además de trabajar como el fotógrafo del Museo Smithsonian Anacostia Comunidad, que documenta el este de las comunidades del río en DC.

El trabajo de Susana se ha expuesto a nivel internacional y nacional, en lugares como: el Museo de Arte Corcoran, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid, el Festival Foto de Pingyao, Noorderlicht Fotofestival en los Países Bajos, y el Museo de Arte de las Américas en Washington, DC.

Exchange edit is a series in which two photographers select images from the various bodies of work of the other photographer and then sequence them to form a new edit.

Today we present the work of fokus (pool olortiga) edited and sequenced by Susana Raab. Yesterday we published work by Raab edited and sequenced by fokus.

fokus (pool olortiga) was born in Lima, Peru in 1980. He writes, "I have dedicated my time to photography since the year 2006 when I started the LimaFotoLibre collective. My interest in photography began in 2000.

Since my beginnings until today, my main interest has been street photography and through LimaFotoLibre I have been developing this interest even more."

fokus (pool olortiga) statement

This is a series made over the years that I photographed the Day of the Dead celebration in Lima, which happens every year on November 1st. In this traditional festivity of our Peruvian mountains, people dance, eat, drink and get drunk remembering their loved ones. These festivities can only be seen in the cemeteries on the outskirts of Lima, known as the cones of Lima.

Esta es una serie realizada en varios años en los cuales he registrado la celebración por el día de los muertos en Lima donde se celebra todos los 1 de noviembre de cada año, esto toda una fiesta y una costumbre que viene de la nuestra sierra peruana donde se baila, se come, se bebe y se embriaga recordando al ser querido, estas fiestas solo se pueden observar en los cementerios de las periferias limeñas conocidos como conos de Lima.

Susana Raab statement on her work
The convenience of modern living has allowed us to enjoy unprecedented amounts of leisure time and methods through which to spend that time. "American Idle" explores our modern preference for the marketed moment, the pleasure purveyed.

It began with a set of brochures found in the lobby of a Gainesville, Florida motel. "Visit Jerusalem in Orlando!" was the unlikely announcement on the Holyland Experience's handout. "Step back in time to the dawn of the Middle Ages" offered the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament. "Be Petty" was the succinct tagline for NASCAR driver Richard Petty's Driving Experience. The exchange of cash for the opportunity to enjoy free time well spent.

I started the project with those venues, and by continuing to photograph festivals, celebrations and events I seek to unravel our modern malaise, one amusement at a time. In the hustle of our lives, leisure time can be as stressful as work. But it does prevent us reflection, from finding a moment's contemplation. The bright lights of the fair can be a darker siren's call. We are lost, wandering through an interminable off-season. The festival is ongoing, but the party is over.
