fototazo has asked a group of 50 curators, gallery owners, blog writers, photographers, academics and others actively engaged with Latin American photography to pick two early career photographers whose work deserves recognition.

This project aims to highlight great work being made in the region today and also to provide a starting point in both English and Spanish for exploring contemporary Latin American photography. LatAm f100 is a collaboration between fototazo and the photographer and educator Jaime Permuth.

Today we continue the series with selections by Jonathan Blaustein. His biography follows his selections.

The series also includes responses from Molly Roberts, Mariela Sancari, Alonso Castillo, Paccarik Orue, Katrin Eismann, Dina Mitrani, Don Gregorio Anton, Cristina De Middel, Arturo Soto, Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Guillermo Srodek-Hart, Yorgos Efthymiadis, Livia Animas, Juanita Bermúdez, Susana Raab, the pairing of Victoria Holguín and Daniella Benedetti, Emiliano Valdés, Muriel Hasbun, George Slade, Marta Dahó, Elizabeth Avedon, Jorge Piccini, Rodrigo Orrantia, Sujong Song, Nelson Herrera Ysla, and Oliva María Rubio.

I admire the clarity of vision and purpose in Paccarik Orue's series "El Muqui," shot in his native Peru. The town in which he's working has an open pit mine in the middle. What else do you have to say?

I met Luján Agusti at the New York Times portfolio review this April, and was immediately smitten with her fantastic photographs, shot in Southern Mexico. They're festive and creepy at the same time. Totally brilliant.

Totalmente brillante.

In 2015 I went to Photolucida and I was supposed to split a room with Hye-Ryoung Min. Unfortunately she had to cancel the reviews and go to Korea so I went online and tried to find a roommate to split the expenses.

That's how I met Cristian Ureta. He is from Santiago, Chile. His book Returning to the Land is simply magnificent. It is about a town in Chile that was built by a mining company to host the miners and their families and was eventually evacuated by the same mining company because of economics and pollution. The project consists of haunting, desolate landscapes and cityscapes of the run down town in addition to portraits of the inhabitants and their everyday life.

Last time I chatted with him on Skype he was collaborating with a book publisher and he was color correcting and supervising future publications for Chilean photographers.

I met Paccarik Orue (originally from Peru - lives in San Francisco) at Fotofest. He had just finished his project "There is Nothing Beautiful Around Here" and had just started working on "El Muqui," his latest project about a beautiful town in the Peruvian Andes that is starting to disappear due to a mining company. Again, striking portraits of the town folks juxtaposed with an ever-changing, fading environment.

Ok, I admit it. I'm very interested in cityscapes and remote places.

I met Victor Zea during our participation in the recent edition of Trasatlantica in the city of Lima. There he shared the dummy of his photobook Qosqokijllu with me, in which Zea crosses the streets of Cusco guided by the Andean light. The result leads the audience to a mysterious place where the Incan spirits reign.
