fototazo has asked a group of 50 curators, gallery owners, blog writers, photographers, academics and others actively engaged with Latin American photography to pick two photographers whose work deserves recognition.
This project aims to highlight great work being made in the region today and also to provide a starting point in both English and Spanish for exploring contemporary Latin American photography. LatAm f100 is a collaboration between fototazo and the photographer and educator Jaime Permuth.
Today we continue the series with selections by Joana Toro. Her biography follows her selections as well as a list of previous contributors to the series.
fototazo ha invitado a un grupo de 50 curadores, galeristas, escritores, fotógrafos, y académicos - entre otros individuos seriamente comprometidos con la fotografía latinoamericana - a escoger cada quién dos fotógrafos cuya obra sea merecedora de mayor reconocimiento.
Este proyecto es una manera de celebrar el gran trabajo que se lleva a cabo en la región. Asimismo, busca proporcionar un punto de partida bilingüe en inglés y en español a las audiencias que deseen explorar la fotografía contemporánea en Latinoamérica. LatAm f100 es una colaboración entre fototazo y el fotógrafo y educador Jaime Permuth.

Faith, like everything human, does not manifest in the abstract but rather incarnates itself in some circumstance, in a small place, in a beloved face, or in the desire, at times almost desperate, to heal. This series documents a cleansing, or healing ceremony, called a "Black Bath" used to cleanse and heal the body and free any bad energies caused by jealousy and envy. Cleansing is a very common practice throughout Latin America, where it takes different forms of execution. This series was created in Concepción, Bolivia, as part of the 20 Fotógrafos camp, a workshop organized by Colectivo +1, and sponsored by National Geographic, Sony and other allies.
La fe, como todo lo humano, no se manifiesta en lo abstracto, sino que se encarna en alguna circunstancia, en un pequeño lugar, en una cara amada, o en el deseo, a veces casi desesperado, de sanar. Esta serie documenta una limpia, ceremonia de limpieza y sanción, llamada un "Baño Negro” que se utiliza para sanar el cuerpo y liberarse de malas energías causadas por celos o envidias. La limpia es una practica muy común en toda America Latina, donde toma diferentes formas y practicas de ejecución. Esta serie fue realizada en Concepción, Bolivia, en el marco del campamento de 20 Fotógrafos, un taller organizado por el Colectivo +1, y patrocinado por National Geographic, Sony y otros aliados.

Joana Toro is a self-taught Colombian photographer based in both New York City and Bogota. Her work explores issues of immigration, human rights and identity and has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Smithsonian Magazine, Open Society Foundations, Photoworld China Magazine and Refinery29 among others.
She worked as a staff photographer with major magazines and newspapers in Colombia before migrating to the United States in 2011 to further her career as a documentarian and artist. In 2014 she published her first monograph, Masked (oodee, London, 2014) which is sold out. Masked was exhibited at the Galería Valenzuela Klenner in Bogota.
She continuously works to develop her photography and has received scholarships for the Missouri Photo Workshop mpw.68, Native Agency Festival and was part of the Mentoring Program 2018 organized by James Estrin and Ed Kashi.
Her work is included in various collections of Latin America Photography. It has been exhibited in international photo festivals all over the globe including Photoville New York, GuatePhoto, Just another Festival India, International Photography festival Pingyao China and more.
